We Become What We Behold

Have you ever found yourself struggling to understand certain scriptures or failing to grasp the meaning of a particular passage? If so, you’re not alone. Moments like these often stir a deep desire within me to dig a little deeper into God’s Word.

One such moment led me to 2 Corinthians, where the Apostle Paul speaks extensively to the Corinthian church about understanding who they were meant to become.

"…we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another."  2 Corinthians 3:18

This verse reminds believers that as we turn our focus to God and behold His glory, we are being transformed into His image through the sanctification process. The clearer our view of Him becomes, the more our reverence, affection, and faith grow.

The Power of Attention

I believe that what we give our attention to, spend our money on, or think about daily shapes who we are. It’s no wonder the Bible continually urges us to fix our eyes on God.

The concept of "becoming what we behold" isn’t new. Our focus influences our actions, and our actions shape our growth. When we intentionally seek God's presence and behold His glory, the transformation is undeniable—we become more like Him.

Renewed in His Image

Colossians 3:10 says, “Put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.”  This renewal doesn’t happen passively. It requires a deliberate focus on the Word of God.

Because through His Word, God reveals His plans for us, showing how our transformation brings Him great pleasure! As we study Scripture, we begin to see how He operates—how He loves, forgives, encourages, and nurtures. We’re also taught, through Jesus Christ, how to extend that same love and grace to others.

However, this journey isn’t without challenges. There are hills and valleys along the way, but every step taken in faith brings you closer to His image.

The following are 3 Transformative Truths of beholding God!

  • Beholding the Lord Reveals His Will for Our Lives

Romans 12:1-2 teaches to present ourselves as living sacrifices and be transformed by the renewing of our minds. This transformation begins with a heart set on God.

  • Beholding Develops Our Faith

Psalm 115:4-8 contrasts idols with the living God, showing us how what we behold influences our faith. Fixing your gaze on God grows your trust and dependence on Him.

  • Beholding Shapes Our Character

As you continually look to Christ, you will begin to mirror His character—becoming more compassionate, forgiving, and loving toward others.

Now A Call To Action

Will you allow distractions to shape who you are, or will you look intently at God, reading His Word daily, letting His glory guide and change you? Choose.

Because the process of transformation begins with what we choose to focus on.

Take time today to reflect on what you’re beholding. Are your eyes fixed on the temporal or the eternal? Make the intentional choice to set your gaze on God, allowing His Word to shape you into His likeness.

Remember, “we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed.” Let’s behold Him together, and watch as He transforms us into His image—one degree of glory at a time.

Prayer:

Lord,

I come before You with a heart full of gratitude and wonder at Your transforming power. Thank You for revealing Your glory to me and inviting me to become more like You each day. Father, help me to fix my eyes on You and to focus on the eternal rather than the temporary distractions around me.

As I behold You through Your Word and seek Your presence, let my faith grow and my heart be molded to reflect Your love, grace, and mercy. Strengthen me on this journey, through every hill and valley, and guide me to live a life that brings You honor and glory.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
